Georgia Aquarium’s oldest African penguin dies at 40

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Living to the extraordinary age of 40, Georgia Aquarium’s oldest African penguin has died, the organization announced on Friday.

Charlie was one of the oldest African penguins ever cared for by humans. Most only live 10 to 20 years, and Charlie’s lifetime was “a testament to the dedication and exceptional care he received from our animal and veterinarian teams,” the aquarium said.

Charlie was humanely euthanized after suffering from problems linked to his advanced age.

Charlie hatched at the Maryland Zoo in 1986 and was bonded with Lizzy, another African penguin, for more than 30 years. The two were foster parents to many chicks.

“We are ever so grateful to have cared for Charlie, and our hearts are with all who cared for him or had the opportunity to meet him in an encounter,” the aquarium said.
