Fort Stewart shooting one year later: Where the case stands now

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WTOC) - One year after an active shooter incident shook Fort Stewart and the surrounding community, the soldier responsible is serving multiple life sentences, marking a significant point in a case that captured national attention.

WTOC has followed this story from day one, from the moments after the shooting, through the investigation and military court proceedings, and now as we take a look at where the case stands one year later.

On Aug. 6, 2025, five unarmed soldiers with the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, were wounded in an attack that unfolded inside Fort Stewart. The shooting prompted an immediate response from military officials and law enforcement as investigators worked to determine what led to the violence.

The soldier identified as responsible, Sgt. Quornelius Samentrio Radford, 28, was later charged and convicted in a military bench trial. Radford was found guilty of two counts of attempted premeditated murder and four counts of attempted unpremeditated murder.

His trial began June 15, 2026. After the conviction, a military judge sentenced Radford to six consecutive life sentences with the possibility of parole. He was also dishonorably discharged from the Army.

During sentencing, the judge highlighted the lasting impact of the attack on the five surviving victims, including the physical and psychological injuries they continue to face. The judge also described the shooting as a deliberate act, citing evidence presented during the trial that showed Radford retrieved his personal firearm, traveled to Fort Stewart, concealed the weapon to bypass installation security, and carried out the attack against fellow soldiers who were unarmed and unaware of what was about to happen.

Sentencing began Monday for a soldier convicted of shooting at six fellow service members last August at Fort Stewart.

Prosecutors argued Radford used his position as a fellow service member to carry out the ambush, taking advantage of the familiarity and trust between soldiers.

One year after the shooting, the criminal proceedings against Radford have reached a sentencing phase, with his convictions and life sentences now in place.
