Douglas A-4 Skyhawk aircraft involved in mishap at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [Update 7/31/2026 4:27 p.m.] A Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was involved in what military officials called an aircraft mishap Friday afternoon.

The mishap happened around 2:30 p.m. on the runway of the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Military officials said the aircraft was contractor-owned and providing military training support.

165th Airlift Wing officials said the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk experienced a blown tire while landing. The pilot was not injured and there was minimal damage to the aircraft. The runway was temporarily closed before the aircraft was towed to a privately owned hangar.

The 165th Airlift Wing fire department responded to the incident.

[ORIGINAL STORY] There is currently a large police presence on the runway at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The image below is from WTOC’s skycam.

We reached out to the airport for more information, they told us around 2:40 p.m. a military-type aircraft left the runway which temporarily closed for 15 minutes.

Officials say there are no injuries but airport police are on scene. Airport and military officials responded to this incident.
