Beach communities brace for impact of Hurricane Erin
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Coastal Empire and Lowcountry may have missed a direct hit from Hurricane Erin, but due to its size and strength, its effects will be felt here.
Beachgoers are choosing to be safe rather than sorry as Erin churns in the Atlantic.
“Even if you are a great swimmer, an Olympic-type swimmer it would be difficult to swim back to shore,” said one beach goer.
Both Hilton Head and Tybee Islands are flying double red flags, and their lifeguards are on high alert.
“There are plenty of areas that we only patrol with a vehicle so and so we can’t be in all those areas at once,” said one life guard. “So people do have to monitor the conditions on their own. I highly recommend staying out of the water.”
Beach conditions are expected to be impacted through the remainder of the week.
If you do venture out into the waters— experts say to stay close to shore, follow all safety rules and watch for those dangerous rip currents.
If you get caught in a rip current, remember to:
- Stay afloat
- Yell for help
- Swim parallel to the beach until you feel the current changing
