Alan Wilson supporters gather in Columbia as GOP voters choose governor nominee

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WTOC) - Supporters of South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson were expected to gather Tuesday at Columbia’s Downtown Marriott as results come in for the governor’s race.
Republican voters are choosing who will face Democrat Jermaine Johnson in November.
Wilson entered Tuesday leaning on his long tenure as South Carolina attorney general. Throughout the race, he has emphasized his record of defending state policies in court and working with law enforcement to target repeat offenders and drug networks.
Wilson has also been connected to the Alex Murdaugh case. In recent weeks, he said that because the case is going to be retried, he may seek the death penalty, though it is unlikely at this point that the case goes to trial before Wilson leaves office.
Wilson is running against Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. President Donald Trump endorsed Evette in the primary earlier this month, but he now says he is endorsing both candidates.
Wilson also has the support of Congresswoman Nancy Mace, who ran for governor and came in last place two weeks ago on Election Day. Despite Wilson and Mace spending months trading accusations, Mace endorsed him before the race was called.
