Willie’s Bar & Grill officially closes its doors, owner announces new learning center

by Summer Swanson

ST. HELENA, SC. (WTOC) - The owner of Willie’s Bar and Grill says he is closing its doors, while also announcing a new initiative called “SHEDWorks.”

This decision comes two days after WTOC reported that a judge was considering taking away the liquor license for the bar and grill. The judge decided to put a temporary suspension in place while he made a final decision.

The bar and grill was also the scene of a mass shooting last month that left 15 injured and four dead.

“After several years of serving as a gathering space, a restaurant, and a cultural touchstone in the Corners community, Willie’s Bar & Grill will officially close its doors. This decision—while deeply personal—comes after months of reflection, safety concerns, community conversations, and a commitment to doing what is truly best for St. Helena Island. The closing of Willie’s does not mark the end of my work. It marks a transition," said bar owner, Willie Turral in a statement to WTOC.

In his statement, Turral explained why Willie’s is closing. He wrote, “The tragic incident that occurred in our community changed the landscape of what was once possible. No matter how much love, effort, or investment went into Willie’s, it is clear that the building can no longer function in its former capacity—not safely, not sustainably, and not in a way that reflects the values we want for St. Helena. But hardship often reveals purpose. And this moment revealed mine. Instead of stepping back, I am choosing to step forward."

He then announced the launch of SHEDWorks, which Turral says will, “function as a walkable, well-lit, fully activated center of learning, culture, economic opportunity, and youth empowerment.”

According to Turral the center will offer: A digital skills & technology training corridor, youth workforce and leadership pathways, adult education, tutoring, and scholarship support, elder tech support and digital literacy among multiple other resources.

After several years of serving as a gathering space, a restaurant, and a cultural touchstone in the Corners community, Willie’s Bar & Grill will officially close its doors. This decision—while deeply personal—comes after months of reflection, safety concerns, community conversations, and a commitment to doing what is truly best for St. Helena Island. The closing of Willie’s does not mark the end of my work. It marks a transition. Today, I am announcing the launch of SHEDWorks: The St. Helena Economic Development & Digital Corridor—a new community-focused innovation and cultural hub built to address the urgent needs of the Corners community and create opportunity for our youth, families, and culture for generations to come.

Why Willie’s Is Closing

The tragic incident that occurred in our community changed the landscape of what was once possible. No matter how much love, effort, or investment went into Willie’s, it is clear that the building can no longer function in its former capacity—not safely, not sustainably, and not in a way that reflects the values we want for St. Helena. But hardship often reveals purpose. And this moment revealed mine. Instead of stepping back, I am choosing to step forward.

Introducing SHEDWorks: A New Vision for St. Helena

SHEDWorks will function as a walkable, well-lit, fully activated center of learning, culture, economic opportunity, and youth empowerment

The mission is simple:

To turn the Corners into a safe, vibrant, and opportunity-rich cultural and economic hub.

The center will offer:

• A digital skills & technology training corridor

• Youth workforce and leadership pathways (Creative, Engineering, Spokesperson, Project Management)

• Adult education, tutoring, and scholarship support

• Elder tech support and digital literacy

• A marketplace for Gullah Geechee makers, artists & farmers Small business incubation and mentorship

• Safe, consistent programming for youth and families

• Lighting, sidewalk activation, and community presence SHEDWorks is not a dream. It is a plan. It is already in motion. And it is exactly what St. Helena needs right now.

Why This Work Is Urgent

The Corners community is facing:

• Unlit intersections

• Unsafe crossings

• Idle youth with few opportunities

• Cultural assets that remain disconnected

• Economic energy with no central hub to activate it SHEDWorks addresses safety and opportunity at the same time.A ctivation is safety. Access is prevention. Opportunity is protection. If we do not build something better in the space where something tragic occurred, we risk letting that tragedy define us.

A Call for Support SHEDWorks is a community project. And no community project succeeds without the community.

Today, I am asking for:

1. Volunteers Mentors, teachers, youth leaders, tutors, and elders willing to give time.

2. Funding, Sponsorship, and In-Kind Support We need equipment, technology, materials, and operational support to open the doors strong.

3. Partnerships Churches, nonprofits, creatives, educators, businesses, and cultural leaders who believe in the future of St. Helena.

4. Youth Our first cohort launches with 10 young people exploring four professional pathways. If you know a young person who needs direction, opportunity, or structure—send them to SHEDWorks.

A New Chapter for St. Helena The closing of Willie’s may feel like an ending, but it is actually an evolution—an upgrade from a single restaurant to a community engine that can lift an entire island. I remain committed. I remain rooted. I remain accountable to this land, this culture, and these people. Together, we can turn this moment into momentum. Together, we can transform the Corners into a thriving, safe, walkable, opportunity-rich community hub. SHEDWorks is the first step. And I’m asking you to take it with me.
