WTOC Top Teacher: Lise Turgeon

by Mike Cihla

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - It’s the start of a brand new school year and time for our first WTOC Top Teacher of the year.

Each week, WTOC and the Georgia Ports team up to showcase some of our top educators.

We’re tarting off this year at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School on Wilmington Island with Top Teacher Lise Turgeon.

“My students know my number one job is to keep them safe, before we can learn anything we have to feel safe, before we can learn anything we have to feel safe. We have to feel loved, so hopefully we can build that in this kindergarten classroom, and extend it out to the world.

It is a magical blend of whimsy and worry, and we have a wonderful time, where we get to learn through play, We learn how to communicate, we learn how to make friends, we learn how to take turns, and some how even through all that play, we learn how to read, and we become fluent in math.

The best part of being a teacher is you constantly get to try again. You make all your plans, you get all your projects in line, and then you see how it works, and you get to try and do it better everyday.

If at first you don’t succeed, you can try again. If you build a tower and it falls down, you look at your tower and you say, how can I build it over, taller and stronger, and that can be done in reading and done in math, writing and can be done in anything you do. You can always get better.

The world is good, these children are inherently kind, they are willing, if we could all be like kindergartners, the world might be a calmer, kinder place," said Turgeon.
