Union Mission begins renovation to expand housing for homeless mothers, children

by WTOC Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Union Mission is taking a big step to help mothers and children experiencing homelessness in Savannah. At the Don and Kaye Kole Magdalene house on East 41st Street, staff and crews from West Construction marked the start of a major renovation with a symbolic sledgehammer swing.

The project will expand Union Mission’s Emergency Housing Program for Women with Children, adding two new family bedrooms and renovating all eight existing family suites with private bathrooms and updated interiors. Once complete, the upgraded facility is expected to serve more than ten additional mothers and twenty to thirty more children each year.

“What these women are battling every day to try to provide for these kids to give them an education and hope for the future; I can’t imagine. So, were gonna help give them a brighter day.”

Plans also include two fully‑equipped kitchens, two laundry rooms, family‑friendly common areas and a dedicated computer lab, all designed to boost safety, durability and healing for families.
