TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Tybee Island Fire Department sent two firefighters and a tanker truck to Brantley County Friday morning to assist with ongoing wildfire operations.

Lieutenant Tyler Hall and Firefighter Gavin Friday left late Friday morning. They will use the tanker truck will transport water throughout the area.

The fire department coordinated with CEMA and City Manager Bret Bell to send the assistance. Fire Chief Justin McMillan said the department is committed to helping others despite its small size.

“We jump at that to be able to do that, so we’re real, the island is very excited to be sending some help down there to help those guys in these historically bad wildland fires that they’re having right now,” McMillan said.

Crew prepared for extended deployment

Hall and Friday will stay at a Brantley County church for the next three to four days. If conditions worsen, they are prepared to stay as long as needed.

City Manager Bret Bell stopped by to see the crew off.

“Just thanking them for stepping up and being just really great partners out there, for putting their lives on hold and coming to the aid of people who really need it more than Tybee needs it right now,” Bell said.

McMillan and Bell noted the island has relied on help from neighboring communities in times of need. Bell said the city is happy to return the favor.

“These guys are pros honestly, I am astounded by the level of professionalism on Tybee Fire, these guys know exactly what they’re doing,” Bell said.

Supplies adequate, caution urged

Crews in Brantley County have received an influx of donations, including water, Gatorade and snacks. McMillan said they have plenty of supplies.

McMillan urged Georgia residents to be cautious with any open flame activity, like grilling outdoors. He said residents should have a water supply nearby and pay attention.

“A grass fire or wildland fire can start extremely quickly and spread even faster, so we just ask people to be aware of the conditions right now,” McMillan said.

McMillan said fire departments are available to answer resident questions and give advice on how to stay safe.
