Tax Free Weekend in SC: What’s tax-exempt and other FAQs

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina’s tax free weekend is set to return just as students head back to school.

Here’s what to know about the annual event, per the South Carolina Department of Revenue:

WHEN IS IT?

Tax Free Weekend in South Carolina runs Aug. 1-3, 2025.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY TAX FREE?

During the weekend, eligible items can be purchased without paying South Carolina’s 6% state sales tax along with any applicable local taxes.

WHERE CAN I SHOP?

Per SCDOR, retailers who sell eligible items participate in tax free weekend. Eligible items can also be purchased online and can either be new or used.

WHAT ITEMS ARE TAX FREE?

Items that are exempt from taxes over the weekend are generally split into four categories:

  • School supplies
    • This includes materials used in the classroom or at home for school assignments, including musical instruments, calculators, and headphones
  • Computers and technology
    • This also includes printers and software.
    • Computer parts and accessories, including monitors and keyboards, are only tax-exempt when sold as a package with a computer.​
  • All clothing and footwear
    • This also includes graduation caps and gowns, swimwear, school uniforms and athletic shoes.
  • Certain bed and bath items
    • Including bed spreads, sheets, pillows, towels, and shower curtains​​.
