St. John’s Episcopal Church brings Good Friday Stations of the Cross to Madison Square

by Julianne Sheehan

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Good Friday is a solemn Christian holiday marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

In Savannah, St. John’s Episcopal Church is taking its Good Friday worship outside with a Stations of the Cross procession around Madison Square.

The Stations of the Cross is a 14-step prayer that commemorates the events leading up to the crucifixion. Members of the congregation walk around the square, stopping 14 times. At each stop, the significance of that station is explained and the group is led in prayer.

Church leaders said the Good Friday service has been held outdoors for more than a decade — and the public setting often draws the attention of people passing by.

“When our Lord was on the way to the cross people were like, ‘what’s going on here,’ and the next thing they know they’re following,” said Jonathan Jameson, associate rector at St. John’s. “And so to see that happen again here in our age is a really powerful thing.”

Jameson said the procession is an all-ages service, and children are invited to take part by reading at the stations alongside church leaders.

St. John’s will hold three Easter Sunday services at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.

Jameson said the 9:30 a.m. service is family-focused and a good option for children.
