Spirit Airlines pauses some Savannah/Hilton Head Int. flights after bankruptcy filing

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Spirit Airlines passengers who have been looking forward to new flight routes to-and-from Savannah may have to wait a little longer to book their tickets.

The airline has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year.

Spirit Airlines celebrated its inaugural flight at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport Aug. 14.

Now, two of four planned routes have been put on pause as the airline plans for restructuring to “position the business for long term success.”

Spirit Airlines announced in April that it was bringing four new routes to the Savannah airport.

The first was a nonstop service between Savannah and Newark Liberty International Airport, which has already taken fight.

The other routes were to Fort Lauderdale, Nashville and Detroit.

Due to Spirit’s most recent bankruptcy filing, flights between Savannah and both Nashville and Detroit have been delayed for the foreseeable future.

On the bright side, the route between Savannah and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is still on track to take off in October. The daily flights to-and-from Newark are not stopping either.

A spokesperson with Savannah/Hilton Head International said it’s a good thing that two of the new routes are safe since similar airports are not as fortunate. They also said the paused routes should not terribly impact business.

Other airlines at the Savannah airport, like Southwest and Delta, service flights to Nashville and Detroit for passengers needing to travel to those cities.

All this comes as Savannah/Hilton Head International undergoes an expansion in which four new gates are being added to its terminal.
