SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The 21st Annual Opportunity Gala was held Thursday night at Savannah Technical College, raising money for hands-on training programs that prepare students for high-demand careers.

Proceeds from the event support student needs such as books, emergency expenses and other costs that can prevent them from completing their programs. College leaders said the funds are especially important for helping students during their final semester.

This year’s gala honored Pat Wilson, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, for his work in promoting Georgia as a destination for business growth.

Guests also walked the “Path of Opportunity,” which highlighted programs that support students at the college.

Ryan Foley, president of Savannah Technical College, said the funds help address workforce shortages and provide assistance to students facing financial challenges.

“Its so very important for us to fill in these workforce gaps that we have here,” said Foley. “So, tonight we celebrate Commissioner Wilson, but we’re also raising funds that help support our students, so that they can get across that finish line. It could be money for a book they cant afford, it can be emergency assistance that they need gas money their last semester.”

WTOC-TV was a media sponsor of the event.
