CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Complications from an epidural injection led to a wrongful death suit against MUSC in Charleston and ultimately a payout by the state’s insurance reserve fund, court records show.

The estate of William Bowen received a settlement of $975,000 from the South Carolina Insurance Reserve Fund.

Bowen was 69 when was referred to MUSC for worsening back pain, according to the lawsuit.

The suit claims that in August 2022, a doctor with MUSC performed an epidural steroid injection on Bowen to treat the pain.

Attorneys for Bowen’s estate say Bowen was not able to move his legs after that injection. He was referred to neurosurgery, which concluded that Bowen suffered an injury from the epidural injection.

They claim at the time of discharge on Sept. 6, 2022, Bowen remained paralyzed. The suit claims MUSC was reckless and negligent during the operation and Bowen was severely injured before his death later.

The suit has been settled. Further details of that settlement were not available.
