Record-breaking freshman class to move into dorms at Georgia Southern University
STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - A record number of freshmen are moving into their dorms Friday at Georgia Southern University.
This year’s “Operation Move-In” will be especially crowded with a record number of freshman moving onto campus.
President Dr. Kyle Marrero says that there will be over 5,900 freshmen on campus this year.
He says in total, there will be over 29,000 Georgia Southern students.
With a record number of enrollment this year, university leaders are saying that they need all hands-on deck this year.
Thankfully the Statesboro community comes prepared with different organizations across this town have gathered volunteers just for today.
“We get help from all sorts of community organizations that volunteer their time and in the community, you will see signs throughout Statesboro and Savannah welcoming them to our towns and to our communities because this is what is important. It is such a big part of the economic fabric of our region,” says Dr. Marrero.
Those signs have definitely gone up around Statesboro welcoming in the new class of eagles to not just this university but this community.
Dr. Marrero says that he is proud to see more Georgia Southern graduates entering this states work force.
“Here at Georgia Southern to see the growth, to see the vibrancy, to see South east Georgia growing and us being such a vital part of that impact of that pipeline of workforce from the beginning as freshman all the way through to graduation, we conferred over 5,700 degrees last year.”
Move-in day at Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus
College students will be flocking to Savannah today for Georgia Southern’s Operation Move-In.
With help from their family and friends, students will start moving in as early as 9am.
Georgia Southern President Kyle Marrero will be on the Armstrong campus from 9:30 until 11am, greeting students and assisting with move-in at Windward Commons.
Expect traffic on Abercorn Street pretty much all day. Operation Move-In doesn’t officially end until 4:30 this afternoon.
Stores will also be crowded as students go to pick up groceries and last-minute dorm essentials.
Around 1,400 students normally live on Armstrong’s campus. While they’re here, students will get to explore Savannah. The campus is on the southside of the city, but just a quick drive or bus ride downtown.
While Friday is Georgia Southern’s main move-in day, students will be driving to both campuses and unloading their stuff all weekend leading up to the first day of class which is Wednesday, August 13.
