Old Savannah City Mission provides shelter during frigid temperatures

by WTOC Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Old Savannah City Mission is opening its doors as a warming center as temperatures drop in the coming days.

Forecasts predict a cold front will bring some of the lowest temperatures of the season Thursday and Friday, with Friday designated as a First Alert Weather Day.

In response to the frigid temperatures, the Mission’s warming center is now open, with staff monitoring guests for symptoms of hypothermia. Jackets and other warm clothing are also available.

The Mission is located at 2414 Bull St. in Savannah.

“When we have an unseasonably warm spell like the last couple of weeks, many times the homeless dispose of awkward-to-carry winter gear,” said Keith Picklesimer, development director of the Mission. “We make appropriate clothing available when they come in for help. But we use the opportunity to talk with them to help make changes in their situation. We invite them to join our program to get off the streets permanently.”

The Mission is also in need of donations of cold weather items including coats, blankets, scarves, hats and gloves. Food donations are also in demand, with the shelter expecting an increase in demand.

Donations are accepted at the Mission’s warehouse at 2414 Bull St. and online here.
