New safety changes coming to dangerous Savannah intersection

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - New safety changes are coming to a dangerous Savannah intersection at East President and Randolph.

To make this intersection safer, the city says they plan to move the crosswalk.

Christy Dicky, who lives near the intersection, says the changes are needed.

“We did see a lady get hit,” said Dicky. “I don’t feel like it’s safe.”

Neighbors like Dicky say East President and Randolph gets dangerous.

“I see people like trying to cross the street and with all that they’re carrying and everything, it takes time for them to get across the street,” she said.

According to Savannah Police Department records, five crashes involving pedestrians have happened here in the past three years.

Harold Taylor, the transportation coordinator for Vision Zero, the city’s initiative to reduce the number of traffic-related crashes to zero, says safety upgrades are on the way.

“Unfortunately we did have a couple ped crashes at this intersection,” Taylor said.

He explained that the changes will include shifting the crosswalk back, adding a refuge island, and installing push buttons to activate rapid flashing beacons that alert drivers when someone is crossing.

The city says new apartment buildings in the area have led to more foot traffic, something these changes are designed to manage.

Taylor also shared that, citywide, traffic crash deaths are decreasing.

“About a 50% decrease since the previous years, the past three years, this year alone. So we’re down from 16 average to this year, five fatalities.”

The city expects the intersection changes to be complete in the first quarter of 2026.
