More than $54 million awarded to improve road safety across Georgia

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Georgia will receive more than $54 million in federal funding to support road safety improvements across the state, including projects aimed at reducing crashes, improving pedestrian safety, and upgrading rural roadways.

U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff announced the funding, which totals $54.2 million and will be distributed across 21 projects through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

The program, launched in 2022 under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, funds projects proven to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on roadways, with a focus on pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

“Creating safer streets is about protecting lives and bolstering safety for all our neighbors,” Warnock said. Ossoff added that the funding will deliver upgrades to improve pedestrian and commuter safety across Georgia.

Where the funding will go

Several large-scale projects are included in this round of funding, including:

  • Carroll County: $18.7 million for roadway departure prevention along six high-risk rural corridors
  • Cobb County: $8.4 million for a multi-corridor safety improvement project
  • Fayette County: $9.6 million for new roundabouts, school zone upgrades, and pedestrian safety improvements
  • City of Cedartown: $4 million for roadway safety countermeasures, including a new roundabout expected to significantly reduce crashes

Additional grants will fund safety action plans, road safety audits, and Vision Zero planning efforts in communities across the state, including Savannah, Pooler, Bryan County, and South Fulton.

Federal transportation officials say roadway safety remains a national concern, with roughly 40,000 people killed on U.S. roads each year
