Marine recruit shot in leg during Parris Island training exercise

PARRIS ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - A recruit was injured today during a marksmanship training exercise at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island, according to a press release from Capt. John Hardin.

The recruit “sustained a gunshot wound to the leg while training on the range,” according to the press release.

Medical attention was immediately provided and the recruit was stabilized and airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center for further treatment.

The recruit’s condition is being monitored by medical personnel.

No additional personal details are being released at this time, out of respect for the recruit’s family.

The incident is currently under investigation and the release states, “It would be premature to speculate on the cause or circumstances until all facts have been gathered.”

“The safety of our recruits and personnel remains our highest priority, and we are fully committed to a thorough and transparent review of the incident.”
