Inmate dies in Telfair State Prison after altercation, Georgia Department of Corrections confirms

HELENA, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed the death of inmate Preston Phelps while in custody at Telfair State Prison.

Phelps died on Dec. 13 following an altercation with multiple offenders, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

His body was turned over to the county coroner and will be transported to the GBI crime lab to determine the official cause of death. Corrections officials say his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Phelps was serving life with parole for murder out of Chatham County.

In 2012, the body of Thomas Phelps was discovered by Savannah Police in the garage of his home on Nilsson Drive after another family member saw it there.

Preston Phelps

His son, then 14-year-old Preston Phelps was charged as an adult in connection with the death of his father Thomas Phelps.

Preston Phelps plead guilty to malice murder and was sentenced to life in 2013.

His mother was also charged with four counts of false statements and writings, two counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of concealing a death.
