Incoming Savannah State freshman passes away in drowning incident
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - On Friday afternoon, Savannah State announced the passing of incoming freshman Donometric “Tank” Hambrick Jr., an incoming member of the Savannah State University Class of 2029.
Hambrik Jr. tragically passed away in a drowning incident over the weekend, just days before he was scheduled to move into Wright Hall.
The university says the student was nicknamed “Tank” for his spirit of determination and resilience, and that he had chosen Savannah State over several other universities because he felt a deep connection to their campus and community.
Hambrick Jr. is remembered as an exceptional scholar — graduating with a 3.5 GPA and earning the highest SAT score in his high school.
Savannah State says also says that Hambrick Jr. embodied the Tiger spirit by overcoming adversity, striving for excellence, and leading with heart.
As reported by the University, even in his passing, he continued to make an impact through organ donation, helping 65 individuals and leaving a legacy of strength and compassion.
A scholarship fund has been established in his name at Kendrick High School for a student who will matriculate at Savannah State University in the future.
Savannah State sent their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were inspired by his spirit.
