Hispanic Heritage Month events in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Monday marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.
This month, celebrated from September 15th to October 15th, honors the culture and history of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
When did Hispanic Heritage Month begin observation? The observation of Hispanic Heritage Week originally started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Regan to a month. On August 17, 1988 the month-long celebration was enacted into law upon the approval of Public Law 100-402.
Why is it observed from the Sept. 15 to Oct. 15? Hispanic Heritage Month’s timeframe is significant as many Central American countries celebrate their independence days within these dates. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their independence days on September 15, Mexico on September 16, Chile celebrates on September 18, and Belize celebrates independence on September 21.
