Guyton community reacts to town’s first murder in years
GUYTON, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC is hearing from neighbors following the arrest of a woman accused of murdering her husband in Guyton.
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jennifer Underwood of Guyton Tuesday.
She is charged with murder in the death of her husband – Johnathan Underwood.
The case is now first homicide the city of Guyton has seen in years.
Neighbors say the couple recently moved into the home and they did not notice any signs leading up to Tuesday’s murder.
We also spoke to people in the Guyton community who call this an uncommon tragedy for the area.
“I’ve lived in this area for many years and I’ve never had a problem or never felt unsafe,” said Joey Warenzak, Guyton resident.
Locals in the area said they were shocked to find out about a violent crime in the area.
Deputies arrested Jennifer Underwood for the murder of her husband Johnathan Underwood Tuesday after his body was found in their home on Pine Street.
I spoke with a couple who hadn’t heard the news until I mentioned it to them, and said this is far from the city’s reputation.
“When we say we live in Guyton, people they say that’s the most friendliest place,” said Larson. “People are so friendly and outgoing.”
Joe Larson drew on his police experiences in the past, saying issues like this don’t just disappear in areas with less crime.
“I was in law enforcement for quite a few years before I retired so you could expect anything anywhere,” said Larson. “No place is safe from crime.”
The Guyton Police sent out a statement Wednesday saying this investigation is still ongoing.
WTOC will continue to keep you updated on the latest.
