Georgia suspends gas tax for 60 days to ease inflation pressures

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Gov. Brian Kemp signed two bills to help lower gas costs in Georgia, suspending the state’s gas tax for two months effective immediately.

The bill suspends Georgia’s gas tax to help ease the effects of inflation amid the war in Iran. The gas tax in Georgia is currently 33.3 cents per gallon and 37.3 cents for diesel.

If drivers put $10 worth of gas in their car, they would be saving over $3 with the suspension.

Jakeyna Johnson, a Georgia driver who uses her car for work, said she often has to fill up the tank twice a week and was not happy seeing the recent increase.

“Oh yeah, I noticed it, when it was $2.49 last week and then this week it’s all of a sudden $4, I feel some type of way about that,” Johnson said.

Drivers said over the course of two months, the difference will add up.

“They said it was going to be around 30 to 44 cents on the gallon, which sounds minor but when you start adding everything up it is going to make a difference,” said Kristen Gonzalez, a Georgia driver.

This is the fourth time Kemp has suspended the gas tax.

Sahid Gonzalez, a Georgia driver, said the suspension would be helpful.

“I think it would be something great. I would love to stop spending so much money on gas,” Sahid Gonzalez said. “I got to get gas anyways, that’s why, I gotta get it anyway.”

While the bill offers momentary relief, some residents are already thinking beyond the next 60 days. People want the gas prices lowered across the board.

One driver said anything under $3 would be fine.

While the bill passed, it may take drivers a few days to notice any significant differences at the pump.
