Georgia Historical Society hosts learning expo for students to celebrate Georgia Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Thursday was Georgia Day! To celebrate this special occasion in the Peach State, the Georgia Historical Society hosted a learning expo in Savannah for local students.

Georgia was founded as the 13th colony more than 250 years ago, on February 12, 1733. And it all happened in Savannah, Georgia’s first city!

Each year as part of the Georgia History Festival, GHS organizes a fun and engaging program primarily for second grade students.

Around 1,100 kids from across the region, including Savannah, Bryan County and even Statesboro, stopped by the expo to learn more about Georgia’s founding and this year’s festival theme, “A Nation of Laws: Courts and the Foundation of Freedom.”

Educators, community partners, historical interpreters and more brought out interactive activities and learning materials for kids to enjoy.

“I feel like the more tangible something is, the more you’re going to remember it. So, kids being able to go from station-to-station to learn about the history of Georgia. The history of not just Georgia but America. It’s really going to instill a love of learning with them,” said Elyse Butler, Manager of Programs & Special Projects, Georgia Historical Society.

Georgia Power sponsored this year’s Georgia Day Expo at the Alee Shriners Temple in Savannah.

Students got to carry home their drawings, as well as informational sheets and other fun keepsakes, in swag bags provided by the company, all things that will remind them of Thursday’s event.
