Gamecocks football player arrested near stadium no longer on team
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A South Carolina football player arrested near Williams-Brice Stadium earlier this week is no longer with the team.
The university’s athletic department confirmed to WIS that Davonte Miles is no longer on the football team. He was a backup defensive lineman who appeared in 11 games last season for the Gamecocks.
Miles, 22, was arrested Tuesday and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
He released a statement on Thursday after news surfaced that he was dismissed from the team.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my recent actions that led to my dismissal from the team,” he wrote in part. “I take full responsibility for my behavior. There are no excuses for the decisions I made, and I understand that my actions did not meet the standard expected of a student-athlete at the University of South Carolina.”

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Miles’s arrest stemmed from a traffic stop in the area of Bluff Road and South Stadium Road at around 1 p.m. He was pulled over for an improper display of a tag and a window tint violation, per officials.
Deputies later searched the car after reporting a smell of marijuana, and found 20 individual bags of what the sheriff’s department called “green plant material consistent with marijuana.” A firearm was also seized.
Miles was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center following his arrest, but has since been released.
