SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A large group of protesters gathered in front of City Hall to protest against ICE activity in American cities following the killing of a woman in Minneapolis.

“All around the state, including in Savannah, people are coming out and saying that what happened to Renee Nicole Goode is unacceptable and that she should be alive today,” said Ruwa Romman, House Representative.

Savannah Indivisible, Savannah DSA, Savannah for Palestine, and PSL Savannah organized today’s downtown demonstration.

“I didn’t expect such a last-minute call to action to be so fruitful, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the people that showed up today,” said one protester.

Protesters say ICE agents are only hurting the cities they are in.

“I think it is very important for ICE to be pulled back immediately before more people are hurt and before more families are separated,” said Romman.

Ruwa Romman, a state representative and candidate for Georgia governor, spoke to today’s crowd and voiced her concerns.

“Georgia now has the fourth highest number of ICE arrests,” she said. “And I want to be clear, those are not criminals. We are actually getting the data from ICE themselves saying these are not criminals, that they are actually also apprehending people that have legal status here.”

Protesters say Thursday’s turnout shows how many people care about what happened in Minneapolis and believe violence like this needs to stop.
