Flooding impacts parts of Liberty County neighborhood

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Some people in Liberty County said they’re left with little options after continuous flooding in the area.

They believe the cause is CSX culverts near their property.

Typically culverts are designed for water to flow underneath roads.

The locals we talked with say they aren’t maintained, so the water can’t flow properly.

WTOC is working to get answers about why that is.

We spoke with the couple that own 20 acres of land. Much of it continues to flood and only gets worse during hurricane season.

Last year, they say they lost livestock, their property is dwindling and there’s no one to help.

They also say it has attracted alligators to their pond, turning it all into a safety concern.

“I went down alongside the tracks, and I saw several huge culverts, I mean they’re like three or four feet or something like that. I saw that they were all blocked, all of them. And you could see where the water was up over the lip on one side and on the other side, there’s not even a dribble, there’s nothing there. Yet you have all of this apparent wetland,” said Liberty County homeowner, Crystle Bishop.

We also spoke with the county who said they’ve tried their best to help.

They say there’s only so much they can do without the cooperation of CSX, who won’t allow them to be on the railroad property anymore.

We reached out to a CSX media contact who said they are looking into the issue.

We expect to hear back from them soon.
