Ferry hits Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island, no injuries reported
SAPELO ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - A ferry named Katie Underwood hit the Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island at around 4:15 p.m. Friday afternoon, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Although 41 people were on board at the time of the incident, Georgia DNR says no injuries have been reported.
The gangway impacted closed after this incident, ferry operations will move to a different dock at Marsh Landing while Georgia DNR evaluates the condition of the gangway. Georgia DNR says they will work with a third-party independent structural engineer and the manufacturer to evaluate potential damage.
Georgia DNR also says they notified the United States Coast Guard about this incident, who will conduct a full investigation into the Katie Underwood.
The ferry will remain out of service until all investigations and inspections are complete.
Another ferry named the Annemarie will be serving passengers while inspections and evaluations are in process.
