Deputy hit by car while directing traffic in Bryan Co.

RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) - The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office said a school resource officer was directing traffic near Richmond Hill Middle School when he was hit by a car Friday morning.

The Georgia State Patrol’s report stated that Lt. Harwood was outside of his vehicle around 6:40 a.m., wearing a traffic vest, and had emergency lights flashing while conducting the school zone traffic control.

It said a 17-year-old driver was on their way to school when they hit him on Belfast River Road and Warren Hill Road. Two other juveniles were in the car.

GSP said they believe the driver was distracted, and it is a factor in this crash. Charges are pending.

Lt. Harwood was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering, according to the Bryan Co. Sheriff’s Office.

“SRO Lt. Harwood was wearing all proper safety gear and clearly visible to oncoming traffic. Despite this, the driver did not slow down appropriately, and he was hit. Thankfully, his injuries are non-life-threatening, and he was transported to the hospital by EMS for treatment,” wrote the Bryan Co. Sheriff’s Office. “Every school day, our deputies are out there, rain or shine, working hard to keep your children, our schools, and the community safe. They are visible, they are trained, and they are doing their job. But they need your help.”

The sheriff’s office asked parents to take a moment to speak with their student drivers.

“With Richmond Hill High School just around the corner from this intersection, many young drivers pass through this area every day. It’s vital they understand how serious and dangerous careless driving can be, not just for themselves, but for those out there working to keep everyone safe. This could have ended much worse. Let this be a reminder: Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please help us protect those who protect your children.”
