Defense seeks new trial for man convicted in fatal Chatham County assault
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A man recently found guilty of punching another man and killing him in Chatham County now wants to delay his sentencing.
In December, a jury found Charles Alexander Teeple IV guilty of several crimes connected to the death of Bruce Helmly.
Those charges include battery, exploitation of an elder, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
He’s scheduled to be sentenced Friday.
However, his lawyers are asking a judge to delay that sentencing and reconsider the verdict.
Teeple’s attorneys say at least two jurors have come forward claiming a bailiff made improper comments during deliberations telling them they might have to stay and deliberate until 10 or 11 o’clock at night if they couldn’t reach a verdict.
The defense says those comments made jurors feel pressured.
They’re now asking the judge to set aside the convictions and grant a new trial.
