City of Savannah boosts stormwater, sewer maintenance after exceptionally wet August

by WTOC Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah is upping efforts to deal with stormwater runoff after one of the wettest Augusts on record.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Savannah received 11.79 inches of rain last month - nearly double the city’s 30-year average of 6.79 inches.

City officials say the heavy and persistent rainfall strained underground utility systems citywide and caused some sinkholes that disrupted traffic.

In a press release, the City of Savannah said Stormwater Management crews have increased ditch and canal cleaning to help water drain from streets to the river. Vacuum trucks have also been deployed to clear stormwater inlets and respond to resident complaints.

Sewer Conveyance staff have been addressing inflow and infiltration issues, such as rainwater entering the sewer system that contributed to recent sewer spills. So far in 2025, the city has reported 13 minor spills and two major ones.

City leaders are urging residents to do their part to reduce flooding risks by keeping storm drains, canals and ditches free of debris. Blockages and buildup can lead to flooding during rainfall. More information on proper yard waste and trash disposal can be found here.
