Cell phones in school? SCCPSS wants parents to weigh in
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System is seeking parental input on the policies for student cell phones during the school day.
Today, September 12, 2025, an email went out to parents in the school system asking for parents to fill out a survey relating to the new HB 340 law.
The HB 340 law requires school districts to establish clear policies for the use and storage of student personal electronic devices (including cell phones) during the instructional day.
According to the email, the law was created to promote safe and productive learning environments while reducing disruptions and distractions in schools.
SCCPSS says its goal is to ensure “focused, device-free learning from bell to bell.”
The survey asks parents a variety of questions, such as “How clear are you on the district’s current rules regarding student cellphone use during the school day?” and “What concerns do you have about student cell phone or wireless communication device usage in school?”
The survey also asks parents how often they communicate with their child during the school day via cellphone use, and how comfortable parents would feel if that ability was removed.
Parents in the SCCPSS school system are encouraged to check their emails and respond to the survey by September 21, 2025.
