CAT highlights new buses and transit improvements, invites public feedback on paratransit services
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - City leaders are highlighting recent public transportation improvements across Savannah’s District 2 while encouraging residents to take part in upcoming public meetings focused on paratransit services.
Alderman Detric Leggett, who represents District 2 and serves as Chair of the Board of Chatham Area Transit (CAT), says reliable transportation is essential to supporting local businesses, workers, and residents.
CAT has added four new fixed-route minibuses now operating on Routes 6 Cross-town, 11 Candler, and 12 Henry, along with four new paratransit cutaway buses to improve reliability for riders traveling to work, medical appointments, and other essential destinations. All new vehicles are ADA-accessible and equipped with audio and visual announcements and bike racks.
Additional upgrades include lighting improvements at CAT facilities, ongoing renovations at the CAT Intermodal System, more operators to improve schedule reliability, and new technology that allows riders to track buses and ferries in real time.
District 2 is also served by the free City-funded DOT Shuttle, which runs about every 10 minutes through the Historic District, connecting parking, offices, shops, and visitor hubs while reducing congestion.
Public Meetings on CAT Mobility and Paratransit Services
As part of a renewed focus on accessibility, CAT will host public meetings on Thursday, January 29, with in-person sessions from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 6 to 7:15 p.m., followed by a virtual Facebook Live meeting on Friday, January 30, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Riders, caregivers, and community members are encouraged to participate in the discussion either in person or online.
The meetings will focus on CAT Mobility, the agency’s paratransit service for eligible riders with disabilities. The meetings are intended to address concerns, increase transparency, and outline steps being taken to improve service delivery.
CAT Mobility has also rolled out a new Intelligent Transportation System that makes it easier to schedule trips and receive real-time updates.
