Bulloch County school board names sole finalist for superintendent

BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Bulloch County Board of Education voted unanimously May 18 to name Torian White, Ph.D., as its sole finalist for superintendent of schools.

Under state law, the board must name a finalist at least 14 days before voting on a contract. The final vote is scheduled for June 11 during the board’s regular meeting. If approved, White would start July 1, the beginning of the new fiscal year.

Board Chair Elizabeth Williams said community survey feedback emphasized candidates with principal and teaching experience, along with visible, student-centered leadership and strong financial management. White previously served as principal of Southeast Bulloch Middle School from 2014 to 2019 and now leads South Effingham High School, his alma mater. He has 23 years in education, including 14 years as an administrator, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at Georgia Southern University.

White, a native of Effingham County, earned his doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Mercer University in 2014. He also holds a specialist degree in leadership from Cambridge College, a master’s degree in education from Troy University, and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Georgia.

The superintendent search began in November, when the board hired the Georgia School Boards Association to run a nationwide search. Richard Smith has served as interim superintendent since April 1. If approved, White would succeed Charles Wilson, who retired March 31 after 14 years as superintendent.
