Bench Trial set to begin for Savannah man charged with killing his mother in 2018

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Court records reveal a bench trial is set to begin for a Chatham County man on Monday, December 1st.

36-year-old Victor Michael Alexander is accused of stabbing his mother, Doris, to death in 2018.

This case has seen many delays over its nearly 7-year history, many of them due to competency reviews for the defendant.

Our coverage of the case began on New Year’s Day in 2019, when Victor Alexander allegedly barricaded himself inside a home on Wisteria Court.

That standoff with Savannah SWAT lasted 5 hours and followed a welfare check. Police say this was after they found a body while walking the perimeter of a property there.

That victim was identified as 62-year-old Doris Alexander. The coroner said she was stabbed to death. The indictment in the case says it’s not clear which day she was killed between December 29th and the 31st of 2018.

He was arrested following the hours-long standoff with law enforcement. A competency review for Alexander was ordered 4 months after his arrest.

Our previous reporting reveals that neighbors say this wasn’t the first time that police were called to the Alexander’s home.

County officials also confirm that officers had been to the house before, where Alexander was arrested on three previous counts of battery-related charges.

He’s facing charges of malice murder, felony murder, 2 counts of aggravated assault, and concealing the death of another.

He’s had multiple competency reviews over the years. He was ruled competent to stand trial last Winter. Now, a Judge will decide his fate, instead of a jury.

The bench trial before Judge Karpf is expected to begin Monday morning at 9 a.m.
