After 34 years with Savannah Police, Torrance Garvin named new chief at Savannah State
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah State University has named longtime law enforcement leader Torrance Garvin as its new Chief of Police, effective April 1.
Garvin brings 34 years of experience with the Savannah Police Department. He most recently served as Captain of the Criminal Investigations Division, overseeing major investigations and enforcement operations.
During his career, Garvin held several leadership roles, including Precinct Commander, and positions within the Crime Suppression Unit, Recruiting Unit, Special Investigations Section, and the Violent Crimes Task Force.
University leaders said his experience and connection to the community make him a strong fit for the role.
Garvin will lead the Savannah State Police Department, replacing Interim Chief Sydney Thomas, who has served in the position since December 2025.
Garvin said he is honored to take on the role and will focus on safety, transparency, and community engagement.
A Savannah native, he graduated from Benedictine Military School and Leadership Savannah and completed leadership training through the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He is a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and the Georgia Chiefs of Police Association, holds a criminal justice degree from St. Leo University, and is pursuing a master’s in theology.
