26,000 flags will blanket Pooler museum grounds to honor fallen WWII heroes
POOLER, Ga. (WTOC) - The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is preparing to honor fallen World War II heroes with its annual “Flags for the Fallen” Memorial Day tribute.
Beginning Friday, May 22, the museum’s Memorial Garden will be filled with 26,000 American flags, each representing an Eighth Air Force airman who lost their life during World War II.
Museum leaders say the display, titled “Flags for the Fallen: 26,000 Flags | One Mission,” serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served.
The tribute will remain on display through Monday, May 25.

Community volunteers will help place the flags beginning Wednesday, May 20, at 9 a.m. A rain make-up day is scheduled for Thursday, May 21. Volunteers will also assist with flag removal on Tuesday, May 26, at 9 a.m.
The museum says the annual event continues to grow as families and visitors gather each Memorial Day weekend to reflect and honor fallen service members.
