‘The Good Side’ returns with daily episodes starting Sept. 14

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Graham Ulkins joined WTOC to preview the new season of “The Good Side,” a half-hour show featuring uplifting stories, which debuts on WTOC Plus on Sept. 14.

Ulkins said the show features stories about people doing good deeds, including random acts of kindness and people who have devoted their lives to helping others.

“We literally scour the country every day looking for all of the goodness that’s out there,” Ulkins said.

Ulkins said a team of local journalists find the stories in markets across the country, including Savannah, Hawaii and Alaska.

“And really, it’s just a show that’ll make you smile,” Ulkins said. “We hope it’ll give you some inspiration to be kind. Maybe some motivation to help out a neighbor or a friend.”

New season features

Ulkins said the new season includes a story about a three-legged dog and a cat who became best friends and were adopted together, reported by cohost Deborah Alfarone.

Ulkins said the season also includes a story about an 86-year-old water aerobics instructor who works out five times a week.

Ulkins said he is interviewing a college student next week who collects books and delivers them to kids with cancer across the country in honor of her father, who is currently fighting cancer.

Ulkins also climbed the towers of the National Cathedral in Washington for a story about gargoyles carved into the building and young carvers learning the trade.

“So it’s a wide variety of stuff, but really, the most important thing is it’s all good,” Ulkins said.

From weekly to daily

“The Good Side” started as a weekly show last year and is now a daily show.

Ulkins said the change came from viewer feedback requesting more good news.

“So I kind of think of this as like a daily cleanse for your timeline,” Ulkins said. “Put the phone down, quit doom scrolling for 30 minutes a day, and just know that there’s a lot of good news out there.”

Ulkins said the stories are shared widely, which helps highlight nonprofits featured in the show.

Ulkins said he hopes viewers take away that the world is a better place with kindness and that there are more examples of goodness in communities than people realize.

“The Good Side” premieres on WTOC Plus at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14. The program also airs on WTOC Saturdays at 5 a.m.
