WTOC broadcast legend Doug Weathers turns 95 today

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A legendary name in Savannah television is celebrating a milestone birthday Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Former WTOC-TV News Anchor and Vice President of News Doug Weathers is turning 95, marking decades of service to the station and the Savannah community.

WTOC Anchor Dawn Baker recently celebrated Weathers’ birthday with cake and balloons, honoring the mentor who inspired her to pursue journalism and gave her a career opportunity at WTOC nearly 37 years ago.

Weathers who joined WTOC just two weeks after the station signed on in 1954, beginning his career as a film splicer. He worked his way through the newsroom before becoming a News Anchor and eventually Vice President of News.

He spent 47 years at WTOC before retiring in 2001.

Throughout his career, Weathers became known for both his work in broadcasting and his commitment to serving the Savannah community.

His influence continues through the journalists he mentored and the generations of viewers he served.
