Three rehabilitated sea turtles released on Jekyll Island

by Jude Binkley

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Three sea turtles were released into the ocean off Jekyll Island after months of rehabilitation at the Georgia Turtle Center.

Peachy, Goosie and Pickles were found weak and sick earlier this year. The young turtles spent months under specialized care, rebuilding their immune systems and getting strong enough to survive in the ocean.

The Georgia Turtle Center said release days are always emotional.

“It is such an emotional peak...back into the wild,” a center representative said.

The release comes during this year’s nesting season, when turtle activity is higher on and near Georgia beaches.

Biologists said many injuries are caused by boats and vehicles. They are urging people to stay alert.

People on the beach at night should use red lights to avoid confusing turtles.

Anyone who sees an injured turtle should call the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
