Savannah celebrates completion of $9M DeLesseps Avenue widening project

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah celebrated the official completion of the DeLesseps Avenue Widening Project with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at Edgemere/Sackville Community Park at Cedar Street and DeLesseps Avenue.

Mayor Van R. Johnson II, City Manager Jay Melder, District 3 Alderwoman Linda Wilder-Bryan and community partners attended to mark the opening of the $9 million project.
The project spans Delesseps Avenue from Waters Avenue to Skidaway Road. The city said it was designed to address long-standing mobility and safety challenges along the corridor.
The roughly $9 million road project took more than three years. Upgrades include road widening, accessible sidewalks on both sides, shared-lane markings for bicycles and improvements to traffic signals and storm drainage.
“We continue to change the quality of life for not only these residents, but the entire city of Savannah,” Wilder-Bryan said.
“We have a saying at Team Savannah that’s GPS, right? Great public service starts with great public servants, and your GPS takes you across DeLesseps Avenue all the time, and now, it’s going to be a lot safer,” Melder said.
The city is also seeking input through Savannah MOVES, a plan to better connect driving, public transit, biking and walking.
Faye DiMassimo, the city’s chief of planning and economic development, said safety comes first when creating and implementing the plans. She said the city looks at each crash or road-related injury to see what could be put in place to keep those areas as safe as possible.
