Medical evaluations underway for accused Apalachee High School shooter

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The accused Apalachee High School gunman who is facing more than 50 felony charges in connection to the Sept. 4, 2024, incident briefly appeared in court on Tuesday.

New attorneys for Colt Gray said their client is currently undergoing medical evaluations that will determine any future motions on his behalf, and they estimated those evaluations will be completed by February 2026.

Nicholas Primm, the chief judge of the Piedmont Judicial Circuit who is presiding over the case, set the case’s next hearing date for March 18, 2026.

Colt Gray has pleaded not guilty in the shooting which claimed four lives and injured nine others. The maximum penalty for each of Colt Gray’s four felony murder charges is life in prison with or without the possibility of parole.

In May 2025, Colt Gray’s former attorneys indicated a plea deal may be in the works.

Colt Gray’s father, Colin Gray, is also charged in connection with the shooting. Prosecutors said Colin Gray gave his son access to the AR-15-styled weapon used in the shooting. Colin Gray has also pleaded not guilty, and Feb. 9, 2026, has been set for his trial.

Jury selection in Colin Gray’s trial will be conducted in Hall County and will also use Hall County jurors, but his actual trial will be held in Barrow County, where the shooting took place.

Barrow County and Hall County are about 27 miles apart. Primm has agreed with prosecutors and defense attorneys that Colin Gray would not face a jury of Barrow County residents.

Colin Gray faces two counts of second-degree murder, 19 counts of second-degree cruelty to children, two counts of involuntary manslaughter and four counts of reckless conduct. He has pleaded not guilty. He is facing up to 180 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Primm has said he expects Colin Gray’s trial to last about three weeks.

Teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie and 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, were killed during the shooting.
