Mayor Johnson orders flags at half-staff in Savannah for Rev. Jesse Jackson

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Flags across Savannah will be flown at half-staff for one week in honor of Reverend Jesse Jackson.

In a post on social media, Mayor Van Johnson issued an order directing that all United States flags and City of Savannah flags be lowered at all city buildings from sunrise on Sunday, March 1, 2026, until sunset on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The proclamation honors and remembers Jackson’s life and legacy.

In addition to his role as mayor, Johnson serves as president of the African American Mayors Association. In a Facebook post announcing the flags would be lowered, he also said he has called on member and affiliate mayors, as well as the President of the United States and the nation’s governors, to join in the observance by lowering flags in their respective jurisdictions.

Jackson, a longtime civil rights leader, is remembered for his decades of advocacy for equality and justice.
