Liberty County to celebrate Susie King Taylor’s 178th birthday at new freedom park

MIDWAY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Liberty County Convention and Visitors Bureau is inviting the community to celebrate the 178th birthday of Susie King Taylor.

The free celebration will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Susie King Taylor Freedom Park at Jones Creek in Midway.

Born on Isle of Wight in 1848, Taylor became an educator, Civil War nurse, author and advocate for freedom. Her work and legacy continue to inspire generations.

This year’s celebration will be the first held at the newly opened Susie King Taylor Freedom Park, a waterfront destination honoring Taylor in the community where her story began.

Visitors will be able to explore the park, learn more about Taylor’s life and participate in birthday activities. A balloon arch and birthday card station will also be available.

The Liberty County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Susie King Taylor Women’s Institute, Liberty County and other community organizations are collaborating on the event.

Admission is free and open to the public. Parking will be available at the park and the Midway Fire Station.
