Kroger employee wins bagging competition in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Seven Kroger employees competed Wednesday morning to see who could bag items the fastest at the Kroger on Mall Boulevard.

Each grocery bagger represented a different Kroger store across the coastal Georgia region.

The theme of this year’s annual Bag-Off was the 1990s. Kroger staff and supporters dressed for the decade while classic tunes played, setting the soundtrack as everyone gathered around the registers to watch the competition.

People used the skills they learned on the job to show off for the crowd while a panel of judges rated the baggers on speed, technique and style.

Ultimately, Evan Gray won the bagging competition.

“I’m very blessed to win,” Gray said. “I’m very blessed for my managers and everyone in the front end who helped me get here today.”

Taylor Ashworth, operations field specialist for Kroger’s Coastal Georgia Division, said Gray joined the company nine months ago.

“For him, it’s really exciting,” Ashworth said. “For him to be able to travel up to Atlanta, compete against the other top baggers in the state, and hopefully he wins.”

Gray will head to Atlanta to compete for the state championship and a chance to move on to a national bagging competition in Florida.
