Honeycutt wins GOP runoff for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WTOC) - Jenny Costa Honeycutt will be on the ballot this November as South Carolina voters elect their next representative for the 1st Congressional District.
Honeycutt won Tuesday’s runoff election in the South Carolina Republican primary.
Honeycutt, a former Charleston City Council member, led the initial Republican primary field and campaigned on her experience winning competitive races. She said her track record in local government and previous election victories set her apart from the field.
Mark Smith, a former state representative and Lowcountry native, highlighted his conservative voting record in the South Carolina House as a key part of his campaign. He told voters he would bring that same record to Washington, D.C.
Both candidates campaigned on support for President Donald Trump, border security and addressing affordability issues in the Lowcountry.
Honeycutt will move on to face the Democratic nominee along with any other qualified candidates, in the Nov. 3 general election.
