Health officials identify exposure sites after new Beaufort measles case

BEAUFORT, SC. (WTOC) - The South Carolina Department of Public Health has confirmed a new case of measles in a Beaufort County resident, marking the latest reported case in the Lowcountry.

According to DPH, the adult patient’s vaccination status has not been confirmed and the source of exposure remains unknown. Health officials say there is no known connection between this case and a measles case reported earlier this month in Hampton County.

The individual sought medical care on June 6, and laboratory confirmation of measles was received on June 10.

As part of its investigation, DPH identified several locations where members of the public may have been exposed to the virus.

Health officials stress that these locations are not ongoing sources of exposure and that the risk is limited to the dates and times identified during the investigation.

People who may have been exposed and are not vaccinated or immune should monitor for symptoms for 21 days. Measles is highly contagious and typically begins with fever, cough and a runny nose before a rash develops.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health says vaccination remains the most effective protection against measles, with two doses of the MMR vaccine providing more than 97% effectiveness.

Officials encourage anyone experiencing symptoms or concerned about possible exposure to contact their healthcare provider before seeking in-person medical care.
