Hampton County cuts ribbon on new high school

by Fletcher Johnson

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - Hampton County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for a new high school that will consolidate the county’s previous two high schools.

County, school board, and state officials joined community members and students for the ceremony, marking two and a half years of construction. Attendees toured the building’s facilities, which include welding, barbering, culinary, and various STEM classes.

‘Opportunity’

South Carolina State Superintendent Ellen Weaver centered her remarks on the theme of opportunity.

“Opportunity to earn college credit, opportunity to master a skill trade, opportunity to discover talents a student never knew they had, opportunity to build a life and a future,” Weaver said. “Years from now I guarantee you people aren’t gonna remember the ribbon we cut today, but they will remember the opportunities this school made possible, because a great education opens doors that no one can ever close.”

What’s next

The inaugural class at the new Hampton High School is scheduled to begin classes on August 10.
