Storm knocks out power to Savannah neighborhoods; Georgia Power working to restore electricity

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE 8 p.m.] Monday afternoon storms have left hundreds of residents without power in several Savannah neighborhoods.

According to Georgia Power, the severe weather brought down trees and snapped a power pole off Middleground Road. Additional damage was reported on Van Nuys Boulevard, where crews had to clear heavy limb debris to repair damaged infrastructure.

The storm caused several branches to fall throughout the Largo Woods and Leeds Gate neighborhoods.

Georgia Power says crews responded to 21 separate events in the area. Within four hours of the storm passing, power was successfully restored to 1,500 customers.

As of Monday evening, crews and contractors continue to work in the area to restore power to the remaining 300 customers who are still without electricity.

“We understand how frustrating it is to return home from work to an outage,” Georgia Power said in a statement. “We appreciate our customers’ patience as our crews and contractors work to clear limb debris and repair damaged infrastructure.”

The severe weather brought down a tree, which snapped a power pole in half in a neighborhood off Middleground Road.
